If the question of whether or not you need a new agency keeps you up at night, you probably aren’t satisfied with the results you’re getting from your current digital marketing efforts. 

The past year and a half have no doubt been the hardest for business. We’re all treading water and trying to stay afloat. So if all businesses are struggling, how do you actually know if you need marketing help? Here are my top 7 signs you need to hire a new agency, or improve the strategy you currently have pronto.

You have no digital marketing agency 

Perhaps your marketing efforts are all still offline, or you’re a small startup trying to manage your marketing yourself but don’t really have advanced marketing skills, knowledge or time to invest in this. Alternatively, you might have a full-time marketing person in-house managing this for you, but you’re doing the same things year after year and things are getting stale. Results are little to none and something radical needs to change. If it feels stale to you, then it’s stale to your customers. 

If you don’t have time to manage this yourself and don’t get the help, most potential clients can’t find your business or purchase from you.

Your business has changed as a result of COVID, but your marketing efforts haven’t

COVID-19 has forced us to work remotely, go digital where we can, extend our offerings through deliveries, contactless payments and face many other hurdles. As a result, your business has evolved and your marketing efforts need to match this. From your website to social media pages, your touch-points with suppliers and clients have had to change drastically. So, if you’re doing the exact same things you did prior to COVID, there’s a good chance your business is a ticking time bomb.

If your marketing results bring in few and few between leads with little return on investment, that’s a very clear sign something isn’t working. Your marketing budget should feel like the best money you’ve ever spent, bringing you measurable results and confidence your money is well spent month after month. Ask yourself the following question- if you had to stop your marketing spend, would your business actually feel the result of that? If the answer isn’t yes, it’s time to switch things up. 

You need to refresh, rebrand or modernise to keep up with the times

Does your website, digital channels or overall brand look and feel outdated next to your competitors? Are they bolder with their marketing campaigns, more recognisable and utilising modern digital platforms where you aren’t? If your digital presence feels inadequate next to at least 3 of your closest competitors, chances are you’re losing potential clients to them.

If you have every intention of scaling up your business, then it’s a must to adapt to the changing needs and evolution your clients’ demands, as well as spaces in which your competitors are adapting to.

If your business feels like a sinking ship and you need to do something radical, implementing a new digital strategy fast can help you bring in results. 

You can’t keep up with digital marketing demands alone

Unless you have a lot of time to create content and manage your website/social media, you’re not going to get much value out of it. Good digital doesn’t have to be expensive, but it will take a lot of time to set up and maintain. If your core business/expertise isn’t in digital marketing, chances are you won’t be able to handle these effectively or efficiently on your own.

Most companies don’t have the budget to hire an entire team of marketers, copywriters, designers and developers.   • They’re experts at executing marketing and will recommend a budget, platforms and hold themselves to industry benchmarks on what you should be achieving with your said budget.
  • They’ve had experience with marketing in your industry, to customers exactly like yours and even working with your competitors.
  • They have a finger on the pulse of what your target market’s wants and needs are, how to reach them effectively and what it’ll take to get them to purchase.
  • They have a full-time team of professionals to execute design, copy, social media, development, etc.
  • You’ll get a lot more from your budget, and since you don’t necessarily need channel experts working for you full-time, being able to tap into these resources when needed makes life a lot easier (and so much cheaper). Leaving more time for you to run your business.

When considering hiring a new digital marketing agency, here are the important key traits to look out for:

  • Do they actually understand my brand, my clients, and know who my competitors are?
  • Have they worked with my competitors or an industry similar to mine before?
  • Have they won any digital agency awards before? Or at-least seem like they’re not a “fly by night” agency?
  • Look at their website, their social pages and just generally do some digging around on their company. If their website isn’t modern, their social pages aren’t active, they aren’t producing quality and relevant content often, or if their client work looks average- that’s all a sign the same would be said about the type of work they’ll produce for your business. 
  • Finally, THE most important trait to look for is when they present a marketing budget to you. Do they tell you what type of results you can expect for your money's worth? This will give you a clear indication that they understand industry benchmarks and how to work out marketing KPIs.
